Dental Bridges London

When a tooth is missing due to loss or extraction, the surrounding teeth often shift – sometimes within very short periods of time. This change in tooth position can cause problems with the bite or gums that can be expensive and time-consuming to correct later. It is therefore wise to consider the replacement of a missing tooth as quickly as possible. Sometimes the bite may remain stable even after the loss of teeth, and in these situations your dentist may advise that you could leave the space if it is not an aesthetic problem for you.

About this treatment

A single or multiple missing bridges may be replaced by the fabrication of a fixed bridge. Teeth on either side of the space can be used to anchor the bridge, either with some preparation of these teeth, or occasionally with no preparation at all. Alternatives to bridgework include removable bridges or dentures, dental implants, or leaving the space as it is. Typically, an implant is the treatment of choice as it is very predictable, does not involve any damage to adjacent teeth, and will last many years if looked after. Removable bridges or dentures are less ideal as they can promote the collection of plaque and food debris around the adjacent teeth, but all these solutions have their place in the appropriate situation. Your dentist will always advise and discuss all the alternatives available to you.

Restoring Your Smile with Dental Bridges

At Ten Dental, our award-winning clinics in Balham and Clapham, London, we understand the impact that missing teeth can have on your smile, confidence, and overall quality of life. That’s why we offer dental bridges as a reliable and effective solution for replacing missing teeth and restoring your smile to its former glory.

Our skilled dental team provides a range of dental bridge options to suit your individual needs and preferences:

  1. Traditional bridges: These bridges consist of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) supported by dental crowns on either side, which are attached to the adjacent natural teeth (abutments).
  2. Cantilever bridges: This type of bridge is used when there are natural teeth on only one side of the gap left by the missing tooth.
  3. Maryland bridges: Also known as resin-bonded bridges, these bridges feature a metal or porcelain framework that is bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth, providing support for the artificial tooth.
  4. Implant-supported bridges: These bridges are supported by dental implants rather than natural teeth, offering a more stable and long-lasting solution.

At Ten Dental, we pride ourselves on creating dental bridges that look natural and blend seamlessly with your existing teeth. Our expert dental technicians craft each bridge with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that the shape, size, colour, and texture of the artificial teeth closely mimic those of your natural teeth.

In the majority of cases, our experienced implant surgeons recommend and provide implant-supported bridges as the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. Dental implants offer numerous advantages over traditional tooth-supported bridges, as they do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support and help to preserve the integrity of your natural tooth structure.

Implant-Supported Bridges vs. Tooth-Supported Bridges

Implant-Supported Bridges:

Pros:
  • No need to alter healthy adjacent teeth
  • Improved stability and functionality
  • Longer-lasting solution
  • Helps preserve jawbone density
  • Easier to maintain oral hygiene
Cons:
  • Requires surgical placement of dental implants
  • Longer treatment process
  • Higher initial cost

Tooth-Supported Bridges:

Pros:
  • Less invasive procedure
  • Shorter treatment timeline
  • Lower initial cost
Cons:
  • Requires alteration of healthy adjacent teeth
  • Increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease around the supporting teeth
  • May not last as long as implant-supported bridges
  • Can be more challenging to maintain oral hygiene around the bridge

Our knowledgeable dental team will work closely with you to discuss your options and help you make an informed decision based on your unique situation, needs, and preferences.

The tooth could be replaced with a conventional fixed-fixed bridge or an adhesive bridge.

Conventional fixed bridgework would involve cutting teeth adjacent to the gap down to receive a crown. The bridge consists of two crowns and the replacement tooth all in one metal/porcelain unit.

Advantages

This will provide you with an excellent aesthetic result and good long-term prognosis.

Disadvantages

The preparation will involve drilling on healthy tooth tissue that otherwise would not need to have anything done to it.

An Adhesive (“sticky”) or Maryland Bridge consists of the replacement tooth stuck onto the back of the teeth adjacent to the gap.

Advantages

The preparation will involve very little reduction of teeth.

Disadvantages

The bridge is likely to require re-bonding periodically when it comes off at some stage. The aesthetic result can also be poor with this type of restoration sometimes.

Implant option

The space can be restored with a dental implant. Information on implants can be found in the implant section of the website; leaflets and further information in relation to this treatment can also be requested from the practice.

Advantages

This option requires no preparation of the teeth, it can give very good aesthetic results and the long-term prognosis is very good.

Disadvantages

This option initially requires a greater financial commitment.
