When people visit our clinic for professional teeth whitening, there’s one common question that pops up: ‘How long does it take to whiten my teeth?’

Everybody’s teeth are different and the answer to that question depends on their colour, condition and the type of treatment a patient wants. Teeth whitening is a very common cosmetic procedure in the UK.

It is available for anyone who is looking to naturally brighten their smile by removing any discolouration or stains due to aging and other lifestyle habits like drinking coffee, wine and smoking.

There are three main options for teeth whitening and some methods may take longer than others to achieve a whiter smile:

The first type is called “power whitening”.

This method uses a mild form of hydrogen peroxide gel to open pores in teeth and allow teeth whitening gel to penetrate teeth enamel. This is usually done for approximately 45  minutes to one hour, during which time teeth are exposed to a special light that accelerates the process.

The second type are “teeth whitening trays”.

Trays are similar to mouth guards, except they are moulded out of teeth whitening material that contains hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These products should be worn at night while the user sleeps, then every couple hours during the day while awake. The trays work by wearing down teeth staining substances over time after teeth have been exposed to it for several weeks or months.

The third kind of teeth whitening treatment are “at-home kits”.

These teeth whitening kits can be bought over the counter or a custom kit will be provided by your dentist. These contain teeth-whitening gel, gloves, a teeth-whitening tray, and instructions. Results usually appear after one month of usage, however the difference is that lights are not used with at-home whitening, which may mean that results take longer to appear.
